So cricket returned, and it returned in great style. A dominant display by West Indies and they go 1-0 up in the test series. So let's recap how things proceeded and what went wrong for England. Only 17.4 overs were played but West Indies had started asserting authority. The pace attack bowled some rippers and the conditions were damn helpful for them. Burns and Denly did a good job in reasonably tough conditions after Sibley missed a straight delivery. Star of the Session Kemar Roach Although Gabriel got the only wicket of the day, it was Roach who was bowling beautifully but not getting rewards for his performance. He was causing problems for Burns. 6 overs - 2 runs - 4 maidens - 0 wickets. Winner of the session- West Indies Probable Result/ Favorites - Draw Day 2 . Session 1 Session Score - Eng 71-4 in 25.2 overs Total Score - Eng 106-5 in 43 overs The batting order crumbled in this session. Holder and Gabriel troubled the English Batsman by finding numerous edges. Crawley and Pope managed to get brief starts but eventually succumbed. Burns and Denly could not capitalize on the good work they did on the first day. Leaving Buttler and Stokes to do something special for their team. Star of the Session Jason Holder Holder came up with some beauties against Ollie Pope, Ben Stokes, and Zak Crawley. Rarely did he pitched something up. Getting wickets of Crawley and Pope. To add to this he called for two DRS leading to wickets of Crawley and Burns. 10 overs - 3 maidens - 21 runs - 2 wickets Winner of the session- West Indies Probable Result/ Favorites - West Indies . Session 2 Session Score - Eng 98-5 in 24.3 overs Total Score - Eng 204/10 in 67.3 overs After ripping past the middle order West Indies did not take much time to wag off the tale. Stokes and Buttler were looking good in there 67 run stand ( 48 off which came in the final session ) when Holder dismissed both in quick succession. Dom Bess went on to add a valuable 31* until Gabriel knocked off Jimmy as the pair added 30 for the last wicket. England was dismissed for 204. Star of the Session Jason Holder Holder scaled four of the remaining 5 wickets including well set Jos Buttler and his counterpart Ben Stokes. To add to this he got Archer with an excellent review. 7 overs - 2 maidens - 18 runs - 4 wickets Winner of the session- West Indies Probable Result/ Favorites - West Indies . Session 3 Session Score - WI 57-1 in 19.3 overs Total Score - WI 57-1 in 19.3 overs Unfortunately, we could only see action for 19.3 overs as the day was called off early due to bad light. James Anderson looked in full flow in this twilight period dismissing Campbell who looked in good touch. Campbell survived two close LBW appeals against Anderson. Hope and Brathwaite walked unbeaten at the end of the day. Star of the Session James Anderson Anderson looked impressive against Campbell angling deliveries away from him. Session 1 Session Score - WI 102-2 in 27.3 overs Total Score - WI 159-3 in 47 overs Windies batsman showed grit and character in this session as they build some partnerships in this session. Brathwaite hit his first fifty in 22 innings. Hope and Brathwaite combined for 59 runs (45 came in this session) together as they faced the swing of Anderson and pace and bounce of Archer and Wood. Chase and Brooks carried their bat through at lunch. Star of the Session Kraigg Brathwaite Brathwaite scored his first fifty in 22 innings and helped West Indies reach a strong total at lunch. Although he looked rusty at the start he hung around there surviving some blows from Archer and giving a display of his temperament. Unfortunately, he got out right before lunch. Session 2 Session Score - WI 86-2 in 33 overs Total Score - WI 235-5 in 80 overs This session was equally poised, Brooks was unable to capitalize on a good start which he got. On the other hand, Bess and Anderson were bowling superbly to control the flow of runs. Dowrich was willing to attack the spinners and Chase was defending very well, he did not want to throw it away. Star of the Session Dom Bess The pitch started to show first signs of turn and Bess was on to it. Using flight and skidders particularly well. Bess controlled the flow of runs earning him the wickets of Hope and Blackwood. 13 overs-4 maidens-31 runs-2 wickets Winner of the session- Equal Probable Result/ Favorites - West Indies Session 3 . Session Score - WI 83-5 in 22 overs Eng 15-0 in 10 overs . Total Score - WI 318/10 in 102 overs Eng 15-0 in 10 overs Dowrich scored a fluent 61 as WI were rattled for 318 thanks to the efforts of Ben Stokes. Chase got out on 47 to an exquisite delivery by James Anderson after which no one offered support to Dowrich. Star of the Session Ben Stokes Ben Stokes starred in this session helping his team wag off the WI tail cheaply. He got a review correct in this session. Rory Burns could not capitalize on an excellent start as he threw his wicket chasing a wide delivery from Roston Chase. Star of the Session Rory Burns Burns and Sibley set up things nicely for the English middle order. Continuing from 10* Burns played some delightful strokes and was looking very good as he threw his wicket chasing a wide delivery from Roston Chase right before lunch. Session 2 Session Score - Eng 89-2 in 30 overs Total Score - Eng 168-3 in 70 overs England capitalized on the good work by Burns and Sibley. Gabriel dismissed a lucky Sibley twice in an over. Sibley nicked a delivery angling away from the leg stump and Denly after a good start threw his wicket giving a simple catch to Jason Holder. Crawley looked in good touch. Star of the Session Zak Crawley Crawley looked in great touch in this session. The way he used his feet, The way he adjusted to the bounce was delightful to watch. He hit an on drive against Roach which left me in awe. Runs Scored - 76(127) Run in session 38(68) Winner of the session- England Probable Result/ Favorites - Draw . Session 3 Session Score - Eng 116-5 in 34 overs Total Score - Eng 284-8 in 104 overs England could not keep the tempo up and perished to some nice stuff by the Windies Pace Attack. In search of quick runs, England crumbled after doing all the nice stuff. Holder yet another time got his counterpart. Toward the end of the day, Joseph and Gabriel combined to bowl some great deliveries. Star of the Session Alzarri Joseph Toward the end of the day, Alzarri Joseph was on fire. The pace attack came together to blow the English middle and lower order. With that high pace and bounce, Joseph just ticked all the boxes to turn the game in the favor of West Indies. 5 overs - 11 runs - 2 wickets - 2 maidens Winner of the session- West Indies Probable Result/ Favorites - West Indies Day 5 . Session 1 Session Score - Eng 29-2 in 7.2 overs And WI 35-3 in 15 overs Total Score - Eng 313/10 in 111.2 overs Wi 35-3 in 15 overs Gabriel racked up the final two wickets quickly as England set West Indies a target of 200 runs. What followed was an amazing spell of fast bowling from Jofra Archer and tight line and length by James Anderson. Star of the Session Jofra Archer Archer blazed past the batting lineup of West Indies. Picking up wickets of Brathwaite and Brooks, also injuring Campbell in the process. Not the quickest spell from him but he was very accurate. 5 overs- 2 maidens- 13 runs - 2 wickets Winner of the session- England Probable Result/ Favorites - England . Session 2 Session Score - WI 108/1 in 30 overs Total Score WI 143-4 in 45 overs Dom Bess bowled some tight lengths, he was turning the ball massively. But Chase and Blackwood handled him patiently and added a partnership of 73 vital runs until Archer got Chase with a ripper. Later Blackwood and Dowrich managed to see the session off. . Winner of the session- West Indies Probable Result/ Favorites - West Indies Session 3 Session Score Wi 57-2 Total Score Wi 200-6 England got Dowrich and the scoreboard read 168-5, there was still hope in the minds of Englishman but Blackwood and Holder ensured that they took their team over the line. Blackwood was dismissed on 95 with Indies requiring just 11 runs. The job was almost done and Holder and Campbell ensure that their team crosses the line without any more wickets. Star of Session 2 and 3 Jermaine Blackwood The way Blackwood played was commendable. He played each ball on its merit and that is what test cricket is all about. He was cutting the ball considerably well. Seeing his terrible record against off-spin he handled Bess very well. He deserved that hundred. Run Scored in session 2 and 3 - 95(154) . A massive factor for WI was that on the first day only 17 overs were bowled, hence they were lucky to bat on a day 4 pitch on the fifth day of the test match. Currently, I see Denly going out and Root coming in for the home side and Broad replacing Wood. The series will be exciting I hope West Indies carry forward their form.
